Final Fantasy. So a question that has bugged me since my first reading if you will indulge me, Generally it seems you pick the winners, Sharpe, Uhtred, Arthur, etc. Was there a reason you chose to enlist Starbuck in the confederacy and not have a displaced southerner fight for the north?
Probably caprice? Greetings from Greece. I would like to thank you for your books. I was 18 when I first read Last Kingdom and now I'm 35 with two children Nevertheless, I can't wait to read this final chapter of perhaps my most favourite fictional character. S: As a woman, I have to say I didn't like the way you treated Eadith.
It was a bit unfair Moreover, I remember Uhtred saying something about Constantin Unless there's been something that I forget so far I haven't read anything about Constantin to justify it.
I hope I'm not talking nonsense. Poor Eadith — but life is unfair!
I've read in your responses that you do not plot and I wondered how that worked with a historical fiction series? When you introduce someone like Kjartan is it the case that you don't know quite what will happen, simply that something will depending on events in between? You know the destination of your trip but not how you'll get there - sort of thing?
And thank you. To find out what happens.
But I do give Uhtred or whoever enemies that might come in useful in later books — and Kjartan certainly filled that role extremely well. I get a third of the way up, look back, and see a better route — so back to the beginning, follow that new route which might propel me half way up, when I look back — see a better route — and so on! Ah well. I hope you're staying safe in this difficult time.
But one major issue seems to have been forgotten - does Uhtred ever make up with his first born son? Surely they will have a moment before the end. However, my very best favourite is Thomas. I've just finished listening to which has left me hungry for more! Read The Trilogy before some time ago I think they were the first audio books I ever listened to! Surely there's, another book in "the works "?
Thank you very much for your books and for choosing the right narrator! Looking forward to hearing some good news? We are wondering why it is you we think have chosen the "west" location of Brunanburh on the Wirrall, favoured by Max Adams, and more recent historians rather than the "east" location near Doncaster as favoured by Michael Wood?
Still think Uhtred should have buried a hoard just outside Lichfield on his way to the battle of Tettenhall, but hey, it was your book. We are partisan, living in Hednesford, not far from Lichfield, Penkridge and Hammerwich.
Are you going to branch into another area of history when Uhtred's story is finished? I still could see a generational gap and maybe a grandson carrying on post Brunanburh - there's the whole drama of Erik Haraldson who may or may not have been Eirik Bloodaxe and the morally bankrupt Wulfstan yet.The Danes had already landed, and conquered large parts of Britain.
Uhtred was brought up to know that these other kingdoms and the Danes were his enemy, and the enemy of his kingdom. Uhtred, who was originally named Osbert, was not the first born. He had an older brother also called Uhtred, who died in battle against the Danes. However, Uhtred of Bebbanburg was indeed a fictional character. Uhtred first appears in the The Last Kingdomwhich is the first book in the Saxon series.
While searching through this historical family tree, Bernard discovered he was descended from Uchtred the Bold Uhtredan Ealdorman of Northumbria and Lord of Bamburgh! In the late 9th century, the Viking Danes had set sail across the sea and arrived in Northumbria.
York was a major town in the North, and was seen as a vital victory for the Danes. Uhtred of Bebbanburg did not want to be left behind with the priest, and so the boy secretly followed his father into battle. Uhtred of Bebbanburg was captured by Ragnar the Fearless, after his father was defeated, and taken to live amongst the Danes. Initially Uhtred was kept as a slave, but through his fighting spirit, courage and determination, Ragnar grew fond of him.
Some time passed, and Uhtred began adopting the Viking way, worshipping their Gods and enjoying the free spirited life that the Danes led.
Things would soon change though. A squabble between children from different families within the Danish camp, led to Ragnar banishing another Viking, Kjartan. But where would Uhtred go?
With allies dropping on both the Saxon side and the Viking side, Uhtred found himself in Wessex. There he would join the service of Alfred the Greatin what was the last unconquered Saxon kingdom. Uhtred of Bebbanburg features throughout the Saxon Stories series, on a quest to seek what is rightfully his. Here are the books in the series:.
Uhtred is an English boy, born into the aristocracy of ninth-century Northumbria. Orphaned at ten, he is captured and adopted by a Dane and taught the Viking ways. Marriage ties him further still to the West Saxon cause but when his wife and child vanish in the chaos of the Danish invasion, Uhtred is driven to face the greatest of the Viking chieftains in a battle beside the sea.
There, in the horror of the shield-wall, he discovers his true allegiance. Discover more about The Last Kingdom here! Uhtred is a Saxon, cheated of his inheritance, adrift in a world of fire and treachery.
He has to make a choice: whether to fight for the Vikings who raised him, or for King Alfred who dislikes him. Alfred and Uhtred make unlikely allies.Altair's Carbon Steel Sword Replica (Assassin's Creed)
The king is a pious Christian, Uhtred a Pagan and warrior. Yet two forge an uneasy alliance that will lead them out of the marshes to the stark hilltop where the last remaining army will fight for the very existence of England. Discover more about The Pale Horseman here!
The year is and the Vikings have been thrown out of Wessex. While Kjartan lurks in his formidable stronghold of Dunholm, the north is overrun by chaos, rebellion and fear. Together with a small band of warriors, Uhtred plans his attack on his enemy, revenge fuelling his anger, resolute on bloody retribution. But, he finds himself betrayed and ends up on a desperate slave voyage to Iceland. The greatest of Viking warriors have a sword.
Viking swords were single-handed and had a wide fuller down the length of the blade. Most blades would be around 30 inches long with some being a little longer or shorter. They are very light and balanced swords, typically weighing less than 3lbs.
The hilts often had a lobed or cocked hat pommel that was decorated with inlay. Note: You must be at least 18 years old to order anything that may be considered a weapon. Historical Notes. Viking swords were all dangerous weapons as well as great works of art. As you can see from the replicas we offer, the hilts were all for single hand use and the designs varied greatly.
Some had straight guards, some curved. Some had pommels with lobes of different shape and size, others did not. Most of them were very highly decorated, often with wire and inlaid metals. These swords were much lighter and well balanced than most expect.
The blades were mostly double edged, but there were also single edged long seax. Early blades were pattern welded steel. Some swords from Scandinavian sagas were considered magical. Like Gram, the sword of Sigurd. Originally a gift from Odin to the Volsungs, the sword is used to kill Fafnir the dragon. The sword was also able to cut an anvil in two.

Norse Warrior Viking Sword.Uhtred with Earl Ragnar. Uhtred found that the Danes had already made their pre-battle sacrifices, seeing a jackdaw's foot hanging from a tree, and he returned to Winchester to meet with the King and with Alfred.
Alfred and Odda the Younger voiced concerns that Uhtred could be Guthrum's spy, that he could be setting a trap, and that he was prematurely claiming to be loyal to Wessex, and, when Alfred agreed to the plan, he decided to have Uhtred and Brida imprisoned pending the coming battle 's result.
Viking Seax, Daggers & Knives
They were released a day later, and Alfred apologized and asked if his apology was enough; Uhtred rudely said that it was not, and that he wanted to be recognized as an Ealdorman. Alfred said that Uhtred was a Northumbrian, not a West Saxon, but Uhtred said that he was an Englishman, recalling Alfred's earlier dream of a single England. Alfred said that he would decide the issue another time; Beocca was upset about Uhtred's rash behavior, while Brida was upset that Uhtred was seeking to become a West Saxon and that he was only seeking wealth.
Brida decided that she would leave to meet with the younger Ragnar by herself, angry that Uhtred had made a promise to Alfred. Uhtred was sent to train the West Saxon soldiers in Danish tactics, competing against Leofric's team of soldiers. One of the tactics taught was the three-layer shield wall, which had been used by the Vikings for their victory at York. While Uhtred trained the soldiers at Wilton, Brida grew sick and unhappy, and she had a miscarriage in the forest; Uhtred later found her bleeding and discovered this, having not known that she had been pregnant.
Uhtred and Ragnar Ragnarsson 's reunion. While Uhtred was training his men, Brida met Ragnar, who had rode to meet her while cloaked and alone. One night, he met Uhtred as well, and Ragnar asked if Uhtred had killed his father; Ragnar refused to answer the question, telling Ragnar that, if he thought he had killed their father, he could come and take his revenge.
Ragnar then confirmed his suspicions of Uhtred's innocence and embraced his brother, and they discussed the need to kill Kjartan and avenge their father. Uhtred talking with Mildrith. Uhtred then took up Alfred's offer of marrying into the nobility, marrying Mildrith of Liscumbwhom he later discovered was heavily indebted; it was a part of a ploy by Alfred to lure Uhtred into serving him longer than originally agreed upon.
Mildrith took him to his new home of Liscumb, saying that, while the land was good, the buildings were in need of repair. He also met Oswald, the estate's steward, and he grew suspicious of his portly physique despite the town's poverty. The wedding day ended in disappointment for both Uhtred and Mildrith, as Uhtred was overly concerned about the money.
The next morning, however, he came to Mildrith and said that he did not blame Mildrith for her debt, and said that she had a good heart; he invited her to eat with him, and they would later consummate their marriage, come to love each other, and, soon, expect a child. Uhtred and Leofric now his right-hand man spotted a foraging party of Danes near Liscumb one day, and, days later, they spotted over of them marching; unbeknownst to them, they were commanded by Ragnar.
Uhtred personally returned to Winchester to warn the King, and, when Odda criticized him for not engaging, he said that he had only 20 men under his command, and it would have been a slaughter.
Convinced that they were marching on the fortress of Wareham as the prelude to a great Danish invasion, Alfred had all of his ealdormen raise their armies and march on Wareham.
However, he instead learned from Alfred that Ivar the Boneless had been killed in Ireland, and that his brother Ubbe wished to avenge him personally, meaning that he would possibly have to abandon Guthrum.
